Discover Cliff's Elbow Room

Nestled in the heart of Jamesport, Cliff’s Elbow Room at 1549 Main Rd, NY 11947, feels like stepping into a timeless Long Island classic where the smell of sizzling steaks greets you before the door even closes behind you. Locals will tell you it’s been a neighborhood favorite for decades, and the first bite makes it easy to understand why. The place isn’t trying to be fancy—it’s about flavor, comfort, and that unmistakable charm that only a true community diner can carry.

What really stands out here is the steak. Cooked on an open flame, the meat carries that perfect char that steak lovers crave. I ordered the ribeye on my last visit, and it was tender, juicy, and cooked exactly as I asked—medium rare with a rich smoky crust. According to local news coverage and countless online reviews, Cliff’s has earned a reputation for having some of the best steaks on the East End, rivaling big-name steakhouses. Their menu goes beyond red meat, though; you’ll find seafood, burgers, and hearty sides like baked potatoes and onion rings that feel homemade.

One of the most memorable things about dining here is how personal the service feels. The waitstaff know the regulars by name, and even first-timers are greeted like old friends. When I asked about their most popular dishes, my server smiled and said, “People come for the steak, but they stay for the warmth.” She wasn’t wrong. I ended up chatting with another couple at the next table who had been coming every Friday for ten years. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built through consistency and authenticity.

The atmosphere perfectly matches the menu: rustic, no-frills, and full of character. The wooden bar, dim lighting, and local photos on the walls make it easy to relax after a long day. It’s the sort of spot where you can enjoy a cold beer while watching a game, or tuck into a late-night dinner after exploring nearby vineyards. While newer restaurants chase modern aesthetics, this one keeps its roots intact. According to Newsday and the Northforker food guide, that’s exactly why it continues to thrive—people crave places that feel real.

If you’re the type who likes to plan before you go, the menu is straightforward and fairly priced. The sirloin sandwich is one of the most recommended lunch items, while the surf and turf plate remains a weekend favorite. For dessert, the homemade cheesecake and chocolate mousse often sell out before closing. Portions are generous, and if you’re lucky enough to catch their specials, don’t hesitate—they rotate with seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms.

From a practical perspective, the location is easy to find. It sits right along Main Road, with ample parking and proximity to other Jamesport attractions like the vineyards and beaches. The restaurant doesn’t rely on gimmicks or heavy marketing—it survives on word of mouth, honest food, and the nostalgia of a true Long Island dining experience. As culinary expert Edible Long Island once described, “There’s a simplicity to good food cooked with care, and that’s what Cliff’s has mastered.”

Whether you’re a local stopping by after work or a visitor exploring the North Fork, Cliff’s Elbow Room offers more than just a meal—it’s a slice of tradition served hot off the grill. The combination of seasoned flavor, friendly faces, and that old-school diner feel makes it a must-visit. It’s the kind of place you leave already planning your next trip back, knowing the steak will be just as perfect as you remember.

  • First visit to this long island institution after a fund day visiting wineries. Reservation for 6:30 and we were seated immediately. Place was packed and I felt like I was the only one there for the first time lol. Great atmosphere. Started with a mixed order of raw clams and oysters. Both were fresh, perfectly shucked and delicious. Wife went with an order of fried calamari which she enjoyed but was nothing”special”. I’ve heard over and over about their legendary marinade so I went with a Marinated rib eye that was on special. Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare as requested. The marinade was very good, but the real game changer was the delicious compound garlic butter. All and all a low key very good meal. You can see why they have the reputation that they do.

  • The food was so wholesome! The steak caprese salad was so delicious! The maple bacon smash burger with sweet potato fries was also amazing. The fries had cinnamon butter to dip with. So good. Service was fabulous. We ate at the bar and Jackie was so personable and kind. We will visit here again for sure.

  • Great local resturant with delicious food and a cozy warm environment. I got the special pickle burger and my mom got wings and French onion soup. The burger was great and the fried pickles on top were a fun touch! My mom’s soup was tasty and the wings were fantastic!

  • Cliff's food up and down the menu is always solid and the wait staff is a hoot and take good care of you. The place is dated but intentionally so - it's part of the charm - and I have never found it dirty or things not in good working order. Good beer lineup, not so sure about the wine. My only issue is that it closes at random times; I've been turned away at 730 in the winter and 830 in the high season, for a place that lists 10pm as its closing hour.

  • Cliff’s Elbow Room Est. 1958 Layout/atmosphere *Cottage; bar area (four TVs; ATM); dining room (seven or eight tables); three parking spots in front Service *Solid Food/drink *House salad (with French dressing) - solid; no cucumbers or tomatoes *Baked clams - Good; mushrooms in the stuffing; not just breadcrumbs and a piece of clam *Porterhouse steak (with French fries & corn) - good; marinade almost like a soy sauce; fries needed salt *Chocolate cake - OK; too dense without moist texture; sweeter chocolate
